Meet the Coaches
Miles Dawson
Miles is one of Mercer Island Boys & Girls Club’s Athletic Coordinators. He oversees our basketball programs and operations. Miles is also a beloved coach of our MI 3rd and 4th Grade Select Boys feeder teams.
Miles played basketball for O’Dea High School before playing a red-shirt year at Highline Community College. He then went onto study and play for Marian University in Wisconsin.
We are lucky to have him!
John played college basketball at Division III Occidental College, where he was a member of three NCAA Tournament teams. After graduating, he began his coaching career with the Pepperdine University men’s basketball program, where he spent a total of 14 years, including five seasons as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator.
After leaving collegiate coaching, John spent one year as the ESPN+ broadcast analyst for Pepperdine. In 2024, he and his family relocated to Mercer Island, and he has since served as the ESPN+ broadcast analyst for Seattle University men’s basketball. He has also enjoyed coaching his daughter's teams at the Mercer Island Boys & Girls Club.
George Irwin
George is currently working as a paraeducator at Mercer Island High School. He is a recent graduate of Western Washington University, where he served as a student assistant for the Women’s Basketball program. During his tenure, the program made three NCAA tournament appearances, including a national runner up in 2022. George played high school basketball at O’Dea High School
